About

Doug Burgett

To be an artist is to believe in life.

– Henry Moore

Doug Burgett is a watercolor painter living in beautiful Savoy, Illinois, a small town in the midwest prairie, just south of Champaign-Urbana and the University of Illinois, where he attended college to study architecture and graphic design.

Before college, Doug spent the early years of his youth in Elizabeth, Illinois, a small town near Galena, where many artists find inspiration among the gorgeous countryside of Jo Daviess county, with its rural lifestyle, rolling hills, breathtaking views, and historic villages decorated with early American architecture. During this time, Doug discovered the art of watercolor painting through Carl Johnson, a watercolor artist with a gallery in Galena.

Doug enjoyed visiting Carl Johnson’s gallery, where he would admire the paintings and talk with Carl himself. But Carl became a true inspiration when he allowed Doug to sit with him while doing two separate commissioned paintings on location. It was a privilege and a wonderful learning opportunity, but also a profound experience that would heavily influence Doug’s journey as a watercolor artist.

Doug’s love for landscapes and architecture can be seen within his paintings, as his subjects are often places: some real, some imaginary, some from his past, and some from his travels.
